Lemei Rock

An evil brave chased a beautiful woman to the peak of Lemei Rock. Rather than submit to him, she jumped to her death in a lava flow. She landed feet first and fell forward, burying her hands in the liquid rock. Her hand and footprints were permanently left in the rock.

You can see a cast of the prints in the Trout Lake Ranger District visitor’s center. The original prints have been covered with several feet of water in Goose Lake.

Some people think that the prints are several thousand years old. Pioneers noted the prints in the 1800s and geologists and engineers have studied them. Some say they are carvings, others say they are real and include fingerprints. Geologists suggest that the prints could be 10-2,000 years old.
