Gyros

These are great with beef or lamb. I prefer the sauce with mint rather than Parsley. It’s much easier to make than you’d think.

Ingredients:

1 lb ground lamb or beef

2 tsp dried minced onion (or 1/4 cup finely chopped onion)

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp dried oragano

6 oz greek or plain yogurt

1/4 cup seeded, chopped cucumber

2 tsp snipped fresh mint or Italian Parsley

1 clove garlic, minced

Pita bread rounds

1 medium tomato

1/4 cup very thin red onion wedges

1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese

Directions:

Preheat broiler. Mix meat, onion, garlic powder, oregano, 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper. Shape mixture into four 1/2 inch thick patties. Place patties on the unheated rack of a broiler pan.

Broil patties 4-5 inches from heat for 10-12 minutes, turning patties once.

For yogurt sauce, stir together yogurt, cucumber, mint and garlic and set aside.

Warm pitas in microwave, wrapped in paper towels, for one minutes.

Assemble gyros with tomato, sauce, onions, feta cheese and meat.
