Palate Expander

I had this expander put in this morning and it sucks more than I could have imagined. I can’t talk right, I can’t swallow my own spit and anything I eat gets suck between the palate and the expander. I have to turn the key 4 times a day for 7 days until the bones break apart. They said it might hurt, so I assume that means it will be complete agony. After that it stays in for 6 months. Luckily, that means it’ll be out by my birthday. To add to my fun, I get a tooth pulled on the 15th. Yay.

  1. ouch!

  2. Holy Cr*p! Are you kidding me? And you are doing this so that you can have a nice smile?

  3. I’m getting the same thing done, but instead of the expander breaking the bone, I went into surgery for it, one turn a day for two weeks, then 10weeks for the healing process. I can’t believe how different each person is in regards to how the palate expander works. Mind you, I don’t have braces.
Hoep it went well and you’re happy with the result.
I too cannot eat much, because I had a broken bone and so when I did try and chew, I’d be moving half of my upper jaw causing quite an amount of pain.

    • Things went well with the expander, although it seems it made the shape of my face slightly different. I was eating a LOT of applesauce and soup while I had the expander in. The braces had to come off early because they were pulling out my front teeth, so I’m in a permanent retainer now to hold them in. Botched braces, but the expander did give me some extra room

  4. I was so close to finishing with mt palate expander when . . .it wasn’t working right! It was pushing my teeth out rather than my palate because my palate was already sealed. It hurt a lot. I just got it taken out, and now I’m waiting to hear if surgery is next. It’s good to hear that it works for some people!
