How Not to Sound Ignorant

After this election I am disappointed in the US public. (I promise I’ll quit talking about the election tomorrow) In reading Facebook and talking with people about their vote and why they are voting the way they are, I’ve discovered that people are a lot dumber than I had thought. I cannot believe the ignorance and misinformation that people just accept as fact. The Sweetness and I call these people Sheeple. Sucking the big media teat and gulping it down. So, here is how not to look like a complete idiot:

1. Keep you mouth shut. Nothing makes you look smarter than only speaking when you have a valid and good point. Speaking too much usually exposes your lack of research.

2. Get your ass off the couch and read. Do your own research. Go beyond the major US media outlets. Read several different versions of the same story from different sources. You’ll get a more complete picture that way. Every news outlet has ulterior motives, be it a sponsor, owner or a viewership that effect how they spin stories. Look at foriegn news sources also. Read between the lines and put the picture together.

3. Have your own opinion and defend it. Do not repeat someone else’s politics. It’s obvious when you’re regurgitating some report you saw on the news last night or a conversation you had. For the youngsters out there: Don’t just accept your parents’ political views. Think for yourself. Do research and find out what you believe in. Stick with your position and defend it. If you waver, you’ll look weak minded and it’s obvious you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Defend your opinion with facts and  ‘I statements’, ie: I think, not personal attacks or insults.

4. Remember your facts and sources. Once you’ve done your research, remember where your information came from. When someone questions your stance, refer them to your source. Sourceless information is useless information. It could have come from the crazy guy that lives behind the dumpster if you don’t give a source.

5. This is all important! Practice some cynicism. Question every piece of information you are given. Consider the source, is it reliable, accurate, accepted? Analyze what a statistic is really telling you. Does it make mathematical sense? Has the data been manipulated? A lot of statistics are total BS. They tell you what the numbers mean, but a lot of times, if you actually look at the study, you’ll be able to see through what they’ve tried to present. Look at the sample size, if it’s tiny, the whole thing is nonsense. Look at the source, was this a legitimate study or just a internet poll? On and on, but do your own fact checking.

Also, calm the F down! I am tired of frantic “I’m leaving the Country if _____ wins!” No, you aren’t. Don’t be a poor sport, you lost. Get over it.  The votes are in and we’ve got to live with the decision our Sheeple have made for us. Unfortunately, the Sheeple outnumber those of us with brains and until we change the media and the mindless consumption of it, it will always be this way. At least this campaign is over and I can turn on the TV again without being molested by attack ads.

And a last note, politics is generally not a good dinner, work or mixed company topic. This has always been an etiquette guideline and I wish it’d stay that way.

To Hell With You, Mitt

Disclaimer: This is a political rant and I express my personal opinion. You are entitled to your own, but please do not post disrespectful or troll comments. Insights, respectfully stated opinions and different sides are welcome to comment. Just remember, if you can’t say anything nice…

I usually don’t post about politics because I think that they are all out for themselves and I prefer to just avoid it since I find it unsavory. I was not going to vote this year as a kind of personal protest because I am repelled by both candidates. (Before anyone gets on my case for not voting; I will absolutely vote when acceptable candidates are chosen).

I don’t know if you follow the news, but Mitt Romney made some pretty horrible comments during a fund-raising dinner. I will say that it was a secret recording and was from several months ago, so this has definitely been released to hurt his campaign. However, this is not his first major case of mouth-diarrhea, just in my opinion, the worst. I will give you some background and then, I’ll tell you why it pisses me off and makes me want to vote for Obama just because I think Romney is a bad person and Obama seems to be the lesser evil.

Facts: The video transcript first came off MotherJones.com, you can find the full transcript here: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/09/full-transcript-mitt-romney-secret-video It’s very long, but here’s the part the news has focused on:
“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. And I mean, the president starts off with 48, 49, 48—he starts off with a huge number. These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. And he’ll be out there talking about tax cuts for the rich. I mean that’s what they sell every four years. And so my job is not to worry about those people—I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives. What I have to do is convince the 5 to 10 percent in the center that are independents that are thoughtful, that look at voting one way or the other depending upon in some cases emotion, whether they like the guy or not, what it looks like.”

My opinion: Basically, he’s written off half of the US as deadbeats that just want to sponge off the government. Where he’s wrong is that included in that number are retired people, people who are too poor to qualify to pay income tax and disabled people. It’s unfair and shows just how little he understands about how the rest of us live. I know that 49% of Americans received some sort of benefits in the 2nd quarter of 2011, which is too many, I agree, however conditions in our economy are likely driving that excessive number. I don’t know about anyone else, but I appreciate the safety net in case I lose my job, get hurt somehow or just fall on hard times. I do not feel entitled or would ever intend to just live off the government and I take personal responsibility for my life. I think a lot of the people included in his statement feel the same way. Sometimes, you just need a hand up. Yes, we should find the people who are just working the system and get them off, but the system should be preserved for what it was intended for, emergency help.

Here are some stats pulled from an APP article about the 47% who don’t pay taxes and a link to the article http://www.gainesville.com/article/20120920/WIRE/120929980?p=2&tc=pg

- About half don’t earn enough money for a household of their size to owe income tax. For example, a family of four earning less than $26,400 wouldn’t pay.

- About 22 percent get tax breaks for senior citizens that offset their income.

- About 15 percent get tax breaks for the working poor or low-income parents.

- Almost 3 percent get tax breaks for college tuition or other education expenses.

Who they are:

- The vast majority have below-average earnings: Among all who don’t owe, 9 out of 10 make $50,000 or less.

- But some of the wealthy escape taxes, including about 4,000 households earning more than $1 million a year.

My opinion again: I think Romney is out of touch, doesn’t care about real people or poor people and has made his money off the backs of those he keeps in the mud. I think he thinks he’s entitled to say whatever the hell he wants and do whatever he wants because he’s rich. What’s with that anyway? How much money do you need dude? 250 million? The first million or the 10th weren’t enough? It’s greedy and I hate that. I’d be more than happy with 1 single million dollars. I’d use it wisely and make it last my lifetime. I also believe you can’t make as much money as he has without destroying companies and lives. I think he’s vile and a snake and I might just go vote Obama as much as I hate to just to avoid this train-wreck of a human being.

Also opinion, but based on old news: And what’s with all your crappy foreign policy comments? You go to London and criticize our closest ally on the Olympics? You call for war in an unstable region without waiting for more details? (the recent killing of US embassy staff in Libya) What the F? Can you imagine what he could say next and what it could spark? The whole middle east is at a tipping point, one or two more incidents and the whole thing is going to go up in flames. I personally would rather not start yet another war or World War 3 because Romney can’t filter his fool mouth. Anyhow, that’s my rant on Romney.

State of the Union

Is it just me, or did Obama just make a ton of promises that we can’t pay for? In his State of the Union address, Obama laid out all these grand plans for creating jobs and being the US we used to be. All these ideas are great ideas for when we have money to implement them. Myself, I’d just focus on paying down the country’s outlandish debt.

Obama even said in his speech that the American people wouldn’t think much of his proposals because we’ve lost faith in government. For me, it’s lost faith in government and Obama himself. I think Obama could have been a good president if he had followed through with half of his campaign promises, but I can see now that he is an idea guy, not an action guy.

A lot of the ideas he proposed are designed to fail, the parties would never agree on the issues and it’d be dead in the water, leaving Obama looking like he tried his best. He said over and over, get me this bill and I’ll sign it right away. It’s a good political move, but I think we need to worry less about re-election and more about the economy.

PS-Did anyone else notice the end? The standard ending is “The state of our Union is strong.” Obama side-stepped it and said, “As long as we’re joined in common purpose, as long as we maintain our common resolve, our journey moves forward, our future is hopeful, and the state of our Union will always be strong.”

You can read the whole speech here: http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/story/2012-01-24/state-of-the-union-transcript/52780694/1

Holy Crap Romney

$42 million in two years, really? I’ll admit that he must be a good businessman, but along those lines, it’s pretty hard to do well in business without screwing people over. I don’t think someone who is supposedly worth half a billion dollars can relate to the needs of the American public. When you have that much money, your only worries in life is how to keep your money and make more, he cannot relate to our daily problems and I doubt he cares. Here’s the article the NY Times ran this morning about his released tax documents

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/25/us/politics/romneys-tax-returns-show-21-6-million-income-in-10.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

The other thing that concerns me is the top contributors to his campaign.Pulled from http://www.opensecrets.org/pres12/contrib.php?id=N00000286 You’ll notice that most of them are banks. Compared to Ron Paul’s top ten, it looks pretty bad. (Ron Paul’s top ten are Army, Air Force, Navy, Mason Capital Management, Microsoft, Boeing, Google, Overland Sheepskin, IBM, US Govt, Dunn Capital Management, Corriente Advisors, Greenstreet Co, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Intel, US dept of Defense, United Technologies, Federal Express Corp and Entergy Corp)

Goldman Sachs $367,200
Credit Suisse Group $203,750
Morgan Stanley $199,800
HIG Capital $186,500
Barclays $157,750
Kirkland & Ellis $132,100
Bank of America $126,500
PriceWaterhouseCoopers $118,250
EMC Corp $117,300
JPMorgan Chase & Co $112,250
The Villages $97,500
Vivint Inc $80,750
Marriott International $79,837
Sullivan & Cromwell $79,250
Bain Capital $74,500
UBS AG $73,750
Wells Fargo $61,500
Blackstone Group $59,800
Citigroup Inc $57,050
Bain & Co $52,500

Great Summary for Republican Primaries

If you’re like me, the whole political circus is just annoying. I usually don’t bother to watch any of what’s going on until the parties figure out their candidates. Then, I’ll research who fits in best with my views. I don’t belong to any party or have any opinions about parties. I have several issues that are important to me and I vote based on those. I’ll get back to that later if anyone is interested in reading about my political preferences, but the main point is that this article/graph is a great way to cut through all the BS and get to the core stance of each candidate. Here’s the link, it’s definitely worth a look:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15949571

Now, if you’re interested in my opinion, here it is. My top issues are: Gun rights, Gay rights, Right to Choose and lately, the Economy. You can see why I don’t vote by party. This time around, I’m personally feeling the best about Ron Paul. I feel like he’s a straight shooter and willing to make big changes. We need truth and change. He seems like a smart guy and has some good ideas, he just hasn’t had a whole lot of air time. So, be a smart consumer and do your own research.

Most of the candidates on this list are opposed to same sex marriage, pro-life or have unfavorable national security or immigration positions. While Ron Paul is pro-life, he is a states rights supporter, so it is unlikely that he would enact a Federal anti-abortion law. Gay marriage is currently a states issue as well. He is for gun rights and wrote up a good essay about it here:

http://www.ronpaul.com/2008-12-09/ron-paul-on-gun-control/

Finally, the economy. From the BBC link at the beginning of the article he plans to, ” veto any “unbalanced” budget; refuse to raise the US borrowing limit; and eliminate the income, capital gains, and estate taxes, and cut $1tr (633.6m) from the annual federal budget.” I’ll reiterate that part about no income tax. Wouldn’t that be sweet? Anyhow, that’s my two cents about this whole thing, let’s get him on the ballot and see what he can do.

*As a side note: before anybody jumps down my throat about right to choose, let me clarify my position. I would never get an abortion myself and I generally disapprove of it, however, I feel that it is an integral right for someone to chose what they do to their body and they have a right to chose what to do with their lives. I also feel that there are circumstances where aborting is the best choice for the mother. Another point is the slippery slope argument. If the law tells us how to handle our health on this issue, what’s next? Bottom line, I think it’s an individual issue and each person deserves the right to make their own decision.

Is anyone else seeing this???

I read this article this morning and have been watching this thing unfolding and I am disturbed.

http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-detention-defense-levin-635/

Please read this article and call up your Congress person and/or senator. Hell, call the President. This is absolutely unconstitutional and should have never gotten as far as it has and was passed by 95% of constituents. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t sign up for this and it seems that our elected politicians no longer have our best interests at heart. As of Tuesday, Obama can sign this bill. He can still Veto it, but from the sound of this article, he’s on board with this. If you haven’t read the article, the bill would allow US citizens to be indefinitely detained and tortured if they are suspected of terrorism. It also says, “any person who has committed a belligerent act” could be held indefinitely. Belligerent acts could be anything. This entire thing is terrifying and violates our rights. I can’t believe that more people aren’t outraged. The country is already going to hell and now this? Is anyone paying attention out there???

I can’t believe that we were ready to impeach a President for cheating on his wife, but the one that runs the country into the ground and is trying to destroy what it means to be an American still has a 43% approval rating. WTF?!?!
